Congressman Jim Moran Meets Political Science Students

Representative Jim Moran met with Herndon High School Political Science students at his Capitol Hill office recently. Students questioned Rep. Moran (D-Va) about his voting record and issues as diverse as renaming Washington National Airport to Reagan National Airport, the Persian Gulf War and the current problems with Iraq, his most difficult vote he ever cast, abortion and family planning issues, scandal issues related to the impeachment of President Clinton and many others. Below are more pictures, quotes and questions from our visit with Rep. Moran.

"If I need a federal law to tell me my daughter is pregnant, then I have not done a very good job as a father!!"

Rep. Moran responds to a question asked by Kristin Blaha regarding a bill that would require parental permission for a minor to get information from a family planning clinic.

"I have not yet cast a vote that really tested my courage. None of the votes I have cast have really hurt me personally or politically."

Rep. Moran responds to student questions as Jean Cho and Hye Oh listen.

"Rep. Moran, as a leader and a catholic, don't you think you have an obligation to speak out against the genocide and infanticide that has resulted in over 30 million young children being killed by abortion?" John Lane

"It's not genocide, it's not infanticide. So long as we remain in a sexist society where women bear the responsibility of raising the children, one should not be judgmental about the personal choices women make." Rep. Moran

HHS students (from left to right) Leslie Weipert, Brynne Teare, Melanie Yu, Kim Love and Parissa Nik-Pay listen to Rep. Moran answer questions.

Morwarid Zarif ponders Rep. Moran's philosophy.

"Re-naming Washington National Airport to Reagan National Airport was a stupid, partisan, political and wrong thing to do!!"

"Rep. Moran, the Libertarian Party only gave you a 30% approval rating. What do you see as the flaw in the Libertarian philosophy?" Malcolm Mullifiroze

"I wish it hadn't been that high. Libertarianism might work if everybody is strong and healthy, but that is not our society." Rep. Moran.

"The advice I would give you as you start your internships is to be courteous, helpful, smile a lot, work hard and you will be invited back" Rep. Jim Moran
