Many thanks to Marcus Garza, Senior Legislative Assistant for sitting in for Rep. Jose Serrano who was unable to meet with us today. With Marcus is 2020 summer intern Evelyn, Intern Supervisor Alexis and US/Va Government student Jacob. In addition to visiting Rep. Serrano's office and impeachment hearing we also attended House debate on Robo Calls and visited the White House and Lincoln Memorial.

This discussion with Mr. Garza took place on December 4th, 2019.

Tyler (r)

Jon- Does Rep. Serrano think Joe Biden, Bernie Sander and Donald Trump are too old to be President? ANSWER- We try to avoid political stuff in the office but I don't know his views on that.

Jenna (r) Please tell us about the people you represent and what your district is like? ANSWER- It used to be primarily a Puerto Rican district but it is becoming more diverse with a big influx from the Dominican Republic also a large African population and African-American population. It's also one of the most Democrat districts in the country. We also have Yankee Stadium, Little Italy, Bronx Zoo...

Camden- What is Mr. Serrano's opinion of DC statehood? ANSWER- He is a suppporter of DC statehood. He is also a supporter of statehood for Puerto Rico.

Lauren (l)  What does Mr. Serrano think of the immigration stiuation in this country, how should it be fixed? ANSWER- There is a crisis and it's been made worse by this administration. He is a big supporter of a pathway for citizenship for immigrants. He says the United States is the greatest country and everyone wants to come here but when they try we kick them out. The process takes way too long. Immigrants keeps our country strong and diverse.

Quinn (r)- Who does Mr. Serrano think was the best domestic policy preisdent and foreign policy president in his lifetime. ANSWER- Oh, I don't know. I don't handle the foreign policy stuff.

 Lindsey (2nd left) What are Serrano's view on the environment and envoronmental policy?  ANSWER- He is a big supporter of environmental policy. He opposed drilling in the ocean and the Artic, we should move our economy away from fossill fuels. He cares about the environment in his distsrict. He has helped clean up that area to the point where there are now beavers in the Bronx river.

Johnson- Should the Whistle Blower reveal himself?  ANSWER- The purpose of the Whistle Blower statue is to protect him, to encourage more people to do what he did. Rep. Serrano would say there is a reason have that in place.

Lily (second right) Does Mr. Serrano think N. Korea should be denucleartized and if nost what should we do? ANSWER- I sorry I don't handle foreign policy so I should not comment on that.

Zack (r) Do you think Mr. Serrano supports the DC Shutdown where they are blocking traffic to suport climate change protestors? ANSWER- I'm not quite sure, but given his background as an activist I think he would be supportive.

Evelyn receives advice on how to prepare for her internship.

Damani-  President Kennedy wrote about Profiles in Courage, meaning one would vote their conscience even if it meant losing their next election. Has Serrano had a vote which might result in him losing his next election? ANSWER- The Congressman would say that his seat is very safe. That being said he has always said he would vote for the best interests of his district regardless of what the outcome may be.

Henry- What do you think of the federal government our founders gave us? ANSWER- Well it has worded for over two-hundred years. It is being tested like none other at this moment. We have a president that is not adhearing to norms.

Andrew (r) Did congressman Serano approve of Adam Schiff reading a statement which was not the transcript of the call to the president of Ukraine? ANSWER- I don't know but Mr.Serano trusts Adam Schiff and his judgement.
