Honoring General George C. Marshall

at HHS and the Marshall International Center Leesburg, Virginia

Rachel Thompson, author of "America's Hero to the World-George C. Marshall" is shown here with HHS student Katie Price. Mrs. Thompson delivered a lecture and answered questions about the life and times of General George C. Marshall to US/Va History students on 10/6/04. On 10/7/04 HHS students visited the Marshall home, Dodona Manor in Leesburg, Virginia and participated in an exercise regarding Marshall and General George S. Patton. Pictures from both events are below.

Students view excerpts of the movie "Patton" including the "slapping incident" and Patton's speech where he noted it was the destiny of the U.S. and England to "rule the world" but not including our allies the Russians.

After viewing the excerpts students read letters in favor of and opposed to Patton that were sent to General Marshall by average Americans. There also read a letter from General Dwight Eisenhower to General Marshall expressing his contempt for Patton's behavior and a letter from Eisenhower to Patton warning Patton that he might be relieved of duty.

After reading the letters, students discussed what Marshall should do, in his role as Chief of Staff of the Army, regarding Patton.

The spokesperson for each group of students announced what advice they would give Marshall regarding the conduct of Patton. Responses included firing Patton to doing nothing to him and lots in between.
