Rep. Dan Burton (R-In), shown here with Niki, met with HHS Political Science students on November 18, 2004 at his Capitol Hill office. Below are more pictures, questions and quotes from this interesting meeting.

Have you ever taken part in log-rolling (vote trading) and if so what were the circumstances? Christian (left) with Nick. Answer- I did so when I was in the Indiana state legislature in order to help clean up a neighborhood after an oil spill. I'm sure I've done it during my time in Congress. I normally would not, but sometimes it is not bad to stray from party lines.

You are lucky kids. You were born in America. You can be whatever you want to be.

We hear how partisan Capitol Hill is. Who are some Democrats you think are really great people? Natalie Answer Charlie Stenholm of Texas is a great guy. I also work well with Diane Watson of California.

Let me tell you about my four heroes. George Washington, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlin, Henry V and Winston Churchill. They never gave up!

If there were a proposal to store nuclear waste in an isolated part of Indiana, would you vote for that as you did for storing it at Yucca Mountain, Nevada? Scott Answer Everybody always says "Not in my backyard!" but we have to put it somewhere. I would not want it in Indiana, but it does have to go somewhere.

You wait and see. When you get a little older and see all the taxes being taken out of your paycheck, you'll get more conservative.

You were one of the few that voted against the "No Child Left Behind Act". Considering all the complaining that has taken place regarding that legislation, have you said "I told you so..." to any of your colleagues that voted for it? Gloria Answer Every child ought to have an adequate education; the federal government should be involved only if absolutely necessary. NCLB has a lot of merit but it is costly. It will lead to more federal control.

I was the one leading the investigations against Clinton, filegate, travelgate, campaign finance...I thought he was corrupt and I still think he was corrupt.

Did you have any concerns about voting for the Patriot Act or how it has been implemented? Mouna (center) Answer I was a cosponsor of the bill and my belief is that I'd rather guarantee the safety of the American people first. We also built into this bill for it to sunset (expire) after a few years.

Regarding your vote banning adoptions in the District of Columbia by gays, are you confident that the D.C. foster home system would do a better job of raising a child than two men or two women in a loving, committed relationship? Meghan Answer Homosexuality is an evolving issue and we do not yet have a full understanding of its causes or its impact. I would not feel comfortable allowing homosexual couples to raise a child until we have proof that homosexuality is purely biological.
